While the Zeta Marketing Platform can facilitate the import of users via real-time API’s and SFTP imports, the platform also allows the manual import of individual or bulk users within the user interface (UI) via a CSV document upload.

Getting Started

1. To get started, navigate to the Audience section from the left-hand panel and select Users. This is where your Users and their associated properties live within the platform. It’s also where we can add users manually. Click Add Users on the right-hand side of the window.

2. You now have two options of which only one is required. Choose the option that suits you below.

Option One: Add Users Manually

  1. Hover your mouse over the option Add Users Manually and click Continue. You can then add the details of new users in the text boxes. Add your first name, last name, and email address.

  2. User ID is the key or the unique identifier for each member of your audience. This is usually an email address but could be something else depending on your specific business requirements.

  3. You can add more 'properties' to your users one by one after importing them with this method.

  4. If you chose this step and completed it successfully, move on to How to Create a Segment.

This is not the recommended method for production use, since it is so manual, but is good to use to get familiar with the platform.

Option Two: Import From CSV File

You can use this option when you need to add a lot of users to the platform at one time. This is a good way to set up your initial audience or to practice further segmentation with fake data. After clicking on the Add Users button, hover your mouse over Import from CSV file and click on Continue.

It is recommended that the CSV file you upload have the following fields for the users:

user_id (required)

This is a unique value used to identify individual users and is usually an email address. If another value is preferred, the email column is required in order to deploy emails.

email (recommended if user_id is not email)

Must be included in order to send emails to the user. Will serve as user_id if user_id is not provided.

This is treated as the first name of the user record and can be used to personalize messages.

This is treated as the last name of the user record and can be used to personalize messages.

This field shows the city of the user, for instance, New York.

This is treated as the date when the user signed up with your business. We recommend YYYY-MM-DD hh:mm:ss format.

The user_id column is the only mandatory column. However, it is good practice to add as much user data as possible.

Here’s a sample table of a users file with an additional company column:

After you import the CSV file, ZetaHub will ask you to verify the user data by mapping the respective columns into the system. You can do it manually or let the system take care of it. Any new properties (columns in the CSV) will be added to the user profile. Any properties that already exist will be updated with the new values. Once you’re certain that the mapping is properly done, click Looks good.

The next screen gives you options to update existing users and optionally create a list from the import. We will create a segment in the next section, so it’s not required to create a list for this guide.

Let's move on to How to Create a Segment.
