Overview

Targeting by Location (also known as geo-targeting) allows you to restrict where your Ads are shown by:

  • Country

  • State

  • City

  • Postal code

  • DMA

  • Geofence

  • United States Congressional District

Getting Started with Location Targeting

Note: When using Location targeting, make sure to target just the locations the campaign needs to deliver to.

For example, if you need to deliver to just Miami, FL (city), do not include Florida (state) or United States (country). Doing so will result in delivery to all of the larger location range.

(This is different from geofence targeting, which does need a country selected as part of the targeting setup. More information on geofence targeting below)

  1. Select Location from the Pre-Bid Targeting pop-up in the DSP.

  2. After selecting the Location targeting option, you will be shown the "Add Locations" section by default.

    1. In this section, you will be able to find and select the following location types: City, Continent, Country, County (coming soon), DMA, Postal Code, Providence/Region, State, US Congressional District (coming soon)

  3. Use the Include/Exclude toggle to indicate whether you'd like to include or exclude your selected locations:

  4. Click the magnifying glass, type in the location name, then hit "Return/Enter" on your keyboard to search through all available locations.

    1. You can also click the filter icon to narrow down your search results or available locations by location type

  5. Use the checkboxes to the left of each location name to add them to the restriction.

    1. The Targeting Summary on the right side of the screen will update as you make your selections.

    2. Within the Targeting Summary, you can also search, remove individual locations, or clear all Inclusions or Exclusions.

  6. Click "Save & Close" to save your changes and exit the screen, or use the split button and select "Save & Apply More" to save and stay on the screen.

    1. Click "Copy Targeting To..." if you'd like to apply the restriction to other objects within the campaign, or click "Cancel" to exit without saving changes.

The DSP bases Congressional targeting on postal codes. We do not recommend Congressional targeting for mobile device campaigns. Create and target Geofences instead.

How-To Target a Geofence

  1. The use of Geofence targeting still requires the selection of a country.

  2. It’s also important to remember that the geofence locations are the lowest (most granular) in the location parent/child relationship and if the regional targeting does not overlap the geofence locations then delivery may not occur (Eg. If you have regional targeting set to include the state of New York and a geofence list with all locations set in the state of California applied on the same campaign, line item, or tactic, then it will not deliver.)

    1. If you haven't already, select the Country (or Countries) containing all selected Geofences in the "Add Locations" section of the UI.

    2. Use the Include/Exclude toggle to indicate whether you'd like to include or exclude the selected Geofences:

    3. Click the magnifying glass, type in the Geofence name, then hit "Return/Enter" on your keyboard to search through all available Geofences.

    4. Use the checkboxes to the left of each Geofence ID to add them to the restriction. The Targeting Summary on the right side of the screen will update as you make your selections. Within the Targeting Summary, you can also search, remove individual locations, or clear all Inclusions or Exclusions.

Bulk Upload Locations

Postal Codes can be targeted in bulk by following the steps below:

  1. Use the Include/Exclude toggle to indicate whether you'd like to include or exclude the specified Postal Codes

  2. Upload a .csv file containing a list of Postal Codes using the box on the left OR copy and paste the list of Postal Codes into the box on the right.

    1. When using the copy/paste option, you will need to click the "Add Locations" button below the box to add the Postal Codes to the restriction.

  3. The Targeting Summary on the right side of the screen will update as you add Postal Codes and indicate the number of Postal Codes that could not be found, if any.

    1. Click the "Export Invalid Inclusions" or "Export Invalid Exclusions" button to download a file containing the full list of Postal Codes that could not be found.

      1. Within the Targeting Summary, you can also search, remove individual locations, or clear all Inclusions or Exclusions.
